아/어서 vs (으)니까 — I keep mixing them up

Both mean "because", right? But my sentences keep getting corrected. 늦어서 미안해요 is fine, but 늦으니까 미안해요 apparently sounds weird?? And I heard commands only work with 니까. Someone please explain like I'm five.
