Is "밥 먹었어요?" a real question?

My partner greets me with 밥 먹었어요? almost every time. At first I gave a full report of everything I ate that day... Later I learned it's basically like "how are you?" Do I just answer 네, 먹었어요 and move on? Do Koreans actually care about the answer?
